Obituary of Charles Douglas "Dutch" VanRy
PIFFARD- Charles "Dutch" VanRy passed away October 5, 2021 at the age of 79. Predeceased by his parents Charles and Ruth VanRy; sisters, Betty Moore, and Mary Brooks. Survived by his wife of 57 years Glenda Bater VanRy; son Kimber (Amy Gossow) and grandsons Sterling and Jules of Brooklyn; son Graydon (Jennifer) and grandchildren Georgia, Henry, and Josephine of Avon; sons Blaine and Harden of Piffard; brother Richard (Melanie) and sister Barbara (Don) Klem; brothers-in-law Gordon Moore and Steve Brooks; brother-in-law Richard Bater and sister-in-law Jill (Jim) Skinner; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
Dutch was born in 1942 and raised in Camden, NY. He was proud to be one of the three founding graduates of SUNY Geneseo's physics program, earning both Bachelor's and Master's degrees. Dutch and Glenda married in 1964 and have called the Genesee Valley their home ever since. Dutch taught high school physics and chemistry for a short time, before pursuing his life's passion working as a restoration contractor for over 50 years. He restored many of the fine homes, churches, and historic buildings in York, Geneseo, and the surrounding towns. He retired after 20 years at Modern Home Center in Nunda. In his final days he remarked he had "many projects left undone."
Dutch exemplified the Kiwanis motto "we build" as a longtime member of York-Leicester Kiwanis. He was also a member of the York Central School Board, York-Leicester Field Day Association, Nunda Historical Society, York Historical Society, Association for the Preservation of Geneseo, and Geneseo Community Players.
Following internment at Pleasant Valley Cemetery in York, a memorial will be held Saturday October 16, 2021 from 12-2 pm at the Yard of Ale in Piffard.
