I had Dr. D'Onofrio for one of my first college classes in 2013, a freshman writing seminar titled "Philosophy of Art". I remember enrolling in the class on a whim, thinking it sounded cool. His class really opened my eyes to discussions of and philosophical debates over beauty and art, and I still remember his lectures and lessons to this day; they had such a profound impact on me, that I carried them with me throughout my transition into a career in the arts/photography.
My good friend Michal was also in his class, and we would often reminisce about the class and what we learned, both from his teachings and the stories he shared about his experience teaching high school physics as well as being a philosophy professor. I always thought he was the most interesting man.
I'll never forget the time when he couldn't hear what a student was asking, so instead of walking past a few tables, he SLID across them!
We just found out of Dr. D's passing, and we are heartbroken. We'll never forget you Dr. D'Onofrio! My heart goes out to his family. May he rest in peace ❤️

I had professor D’Onfrio my first semester freshman year, halfway through the semester my Dad passed and it was a really tough time for me. However, the things Professor taught us and his passion for philosophy really helped me through my tough times. I emailed him and talked to him even after I was in his class. I didn’t realize he did not respond to my last email because he passed away. Like in Dante’s Inferno when Dante was reunited with all of the great philosophers, I would like to believe Professor is as well.
My condolences ,
Luke

Marie and Nicholas,
I am so sorry for your loss. I feel so lucky to have known “My John” throughout my youth. I will remember his warmth, laughter and enthusiasm. He might have been too optimistic in my ability to learn physics, but I’m so grateful to have called him friend. Love to you all,
Kate

Mrs. D'Onofrio and family,
I am very sorry to hear of Dr. D's passing. I remember his science classes very well. Science was not my favorite subject but his lively personality and fun way of teaching made it easier for me to learn the material. He was a wonderful teacher.
My thoughts and prayers are with you and your son. I hope that your memories comfort you during this difficult time.

John was a great friend, mentor, teaching colleague, and fellow trumpet player. He was always taking time to ask about me and my family and was a deeply caring and interesting person. He was so brilliant in his knowledge of so many things and was always striving to learn more and improve in all areas. I will always remember listening to him practice trumpet at school and sharing many moments discussing school, physics, and most importantly family. He was always so encouraging to me and to so many others! I will miss his friendly, engaging, and positive energy! Thank you John for being such a great friend to us all!!!!

Dear Marie,
I was so sad to see in the paper that your husband, John, had died. My husband, Larry, worked with John in the Philosophy Dept at Geneseo. I knew John, because he did some handiwork for Larry and me, at our house, when we were first married way back in 1984.
Quite a coincidence that they both died at the same age. Larry died this past January from complications of Parkinson's. So, this is the first Thanksgiving we celebrated without him, and he was greatly missed.
Larry was very fond of John, as was I. He was a pleasure to know, always smiling. I still remember how happy he was when he had married you and then when his precious Nicholas was born.
I know that Larry, John, and Bill Edgar are three happy philosophers philosophizing in heaven now.
May God bless you always, as we both go on in joyful anticipation of reunification with our beloved husbands.

I have such fond memories of Dr. D's high school physics class in the 1980's.
He would often come to our lab bench and greet us with conversation containing a good vocabulary word. He taught us the word "ubiquitous".
He was the kind of teacher who created lifelong memories. So sorry for your loss.

Dr. D was one of the best teachers I ever had! He had the ability to turn the spark of curiosity into a lifelong flame of learning and a love of science. As an educator, what was amazing about Dr. D was that he conveyed his excitement and interest and the integrity of science in the class room. After the class he was more than happy to help you learn about Newton’s laws, talk to you about philosophy, teach you how to play chess, or helping you with a big decision like deciding what college to go too.
There is a likely possibility that with every breath you take you are breathing in atoms that Dr. D breathed out all those years ago in high school. This is true because, for every breath you take you inhale more molecules of air then there are breaths of air in the entire earth’s atmosphere. It’s because of this fact anytime someone has exhaled in the past there are enough molecules to spread into everyone’s breath.
So every time I feel like I’m stuck on a problem I would like to think that I am breathing in atoms from Dr. D to help solve that problem, and that sense of joy and mystery is what science is all about and Dr. D conveyed that.
Dr. D you will be truly missed and my deepest sympathies go out to Marie and Nicholas.

Dr. D was one of my all-time favorite teachers and did so much to make my high school experience better; from talking me through Newtonian physics again and again, to philosophizing about life and college decisions during study halls, to letting us hide cookies on his bookshelf to get through the bad days. Not to mention the general mayhem for pumpkin chunkin and a dozen other questionably conceived projects. He was the first one to tell me about RPI and encouraged me to go after things I wanted, even if it was just an elusive “OK” on my midterm. I always thought I would run into him at Wegmans and be able to thank him for all those hours, years ago. RIP Dr. D, you are already missed.

John was such a wonderful colleague! Always upbeat, and so interested in kids. Remember his and Marie’s wedding and how excited they were when Nick joined the family. In retirement have loved bumping into him at Wegmans and Lattimore... just to catch up! So sad to hear of John’s passing but he always faced life in such a Scientific way. I’m certain that his positive energy is flowing in the universe as I write.
