ITS ALMOST JANUARY 17, THE BIRTHDAY OF MY CHILDHOOD PLAYMATE, JAMES HALL FRASER. I TRY TO PHONE HIM EACH YEAR AT THIS TIME. WE RECALL SHARING BIRTHDAYS AT OUR HOMES, THE NAMES OF OUR FIRST TEACHERS IN SUNDAY SCHOOL AND IN CALEDONIA GRADE SCHOOL.WE TALKED ABOUT PLAYING WITH OUR ELECTRIC TRAINS AND ERECTOR SET. WE SHARED SCHOOL UNTIL HIS FAMILY MOVED TO THE FARM IN FOWLERVILLE,AND A DIFFERENT SCHOOL DISTRICT. …THEN HE WENT TO CORNELL AND I WENT TO U OF ROCHESTER. JIM DROVE MY PARENTS TO VISIT ME AS I SERVED IN PRESBYTERIAN SUMMER SERVICE THAT SUMMER I WAS ASSIGNED TOTHE WEST VA. MT. PROJECT. IN OUR RECENT VISIT,HE RECALLED THE NAMES OF THE NATIONAL MISSIONS WORKERS WE MET. ANOTHER MEMORY WE HAD WAS TRYING TO DOUBLE DATE WITH CO-EDS AT U.OF R.
ONE OF THE LAST TIMES WE SAW EACH OTHER WAS AT THE CALEDONIA CHURCH.
IT IS HARD TO SAY GOOD BYE TO MY LIFETIME FRIEND. I THANK GOD FOR GOOD MEMORIES OF A LIFE SHARED.
MAY THE GRACE AND PEACE OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST BE WITH YOU JIM, IN ETERNITY.

Jim,
Jim and I sat across from each other for 10 years as part of the men’s discussion group at Mendon Church; we met every Saturday morning for a couple of hours to discuss and debate an assigned book we were reading. Given his chatty nature, Jim was good-natured ly given a three-minute allotment of each week.
Since leaving the church, after moving to the west side of Rochester a few years ago, Jim made a point of keeping in touch with me; we’d go out to lunch 2-3 times a year, most recently last summer. In this year’s Xmas card, I suggested we get together in January. It’s always later than it seems.
I’ll miss Jim’s mischievous side (he used to mail me exotic travel articles and dating advice, among other stuff), the twinkle in his eye, his meandering digressions, and his concern for me after my divorce. Having been through one or two himself, he knew how life-altering they often are.
He was a character and a good man. I’ll miss him.
