I worked at the Volpe Center for 28 years. I really enjoyed working with Bernie and for a short period, for him. He had great kindness and integrity and I loved his sense of humor. My condolences to Bernie's entire family.

Bernie was my supervisor at the Volpe Center in Cambridge, MA and was directly responsible for my having gotten a Master's Degree in Civil Engineering with a Transportation Major. Bernie was a "no nonsense" guy. I wrote about Bernie in a book I published (on pages 96-100): Over Coming Obstacles, A Memoir of Ann DiMare's Life. May Bernie rest in peace. He was a great man.

When I went to work at the Volpe Center in 1991 (my first full-time job after college), I was hired by Bernie and worked in his group for three years. I remember him as a quiet and fair supervisor who encouraged my professional development, enabling me to take graduate level classes at MIT. I learned a lot during that time and appreciated his support. I've thought of Bernie often over the years -- he lived a long and meaningful life. May he rest in peace.

To Uncle Bernie’s Beloved Family,
I have several fond memories of my Uncle Bernie. As I was growing up, I remember several short visits and was always taken aback how similar Uncle Bernie and my Father, David Blood are. There was no doubt they were the Blood Brothers.
My husband, Bruce and I were blessed to be living close to them in 2013, where we were able to really get to know Uncle Bernie and Auntie Diana. So many happy memories of meals shared and a lot of laughter. We were honored when they were able to attend our garden wedding.
I always knew Uncle Bernie to have a dry sense of humor and a man of few words. Very similar to my father, David Blood. Both Bruce and I cherish those memories.
He was a great man full of dignity and integrity. He will be greatly missed. All our lives were enriched by his character. We love Uncle Bernie dearly.

Our Memories of Bernie Blood
One of my favorite memories of Bernie was when he took David and me to spend a day at the JFK Library in 1995. Bernie was as excited as we were to spend a leisure day at this incredible Library; he shared so many behind the scene stories with us. I told Bernie that David and I shook John Kennedy’s hand during his 1960 Campaign; at first Bernie thought I was kidding him, then was slightly envious of our experience. I teased him relentlessly, at this point. I will always love and miss this intelligent, rare man.
Charlotte (Char) Blood, Sister-In-Law to our Beloved Bernie
My fondest memories of Bernie were growing up in Crosby, MN. An example was Bernie hired me to help him with his Paper Route for the Minneapolis Star Tribune. Bernie hired and fired me many times; however, he always treated me with a milkshake. We had a close relationship mixed with love and respect for each other. Later on in life, I was always was aware when Bernie became annoyed in public, as the result of unnecessary trivia. I could always detect by his body language when Bernie was ready to announce, in his deep authoritative voice, that he was Bernard Blood, followed with a quick solution to end the issue. This never failed to trigger a silent chuckle from me. Bernie and I were able to communicate well, with few words. I will always love and miss this brilliant man.

To Bernie's beloved family.
Bernie was my adored oldest brother. He had a huge impact on my life. He was always so good to his little sister who could be a real pest when he was trying to study. He always encouraged me to excel in all that I did, my career, and going to college later. He always gave me good advice. He did so many kind things over the years. He was there for me during crisis and loss. I loved visiting with him and getting his opinions. One of the many kind things he did for me was when I was in Junior High. I had a scholarship to an Allstate Music festival at the University of Montana, but getting train fare from Billings to Missoula was difficult. He sent me money for the train fare. I have so many memories like that. I loved him very much.

Dear Bernie, You have always been to me a big brother, husband of my adored big sister, the ideal model of kindness and tolerance; father to your two small children, head of your family able to juggle both parent-participation and work obligations, ready and regular as the ticking of a clock. I knew you when I was only 8,the youngest of your sisters-in-law.
You always found a way to include me in the family, and helped me to understand the world around me. Later, after college, you continued to share your wisdom, and welcomed my French fiancé. Then, in 1980, you became the uncle of my first daughter, Jenny, and in 1985, uncle to my second daughter, Louisa.
You and Diana have always been there for us, and I know how important you both are in Jenny and Louisa's development and world outlook. Family matters, human relationships are so important, and people like you share their love with the world. I, too, love you very much. May you have peace on your journey home.
Notre Esperance en Jesus Christ:
Maintenant donc ces trois choses restent: la foi, l'espérance, l'amour; mais la plus grande des trois, c'est l'amour.
( And now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love.) 1 Corinthiens 13: 13
Notre esperance en Jesus Christ est l'ultime realite vers laquelle convergent toutes les autres realites de la vie ici-bas ainsi que celle de la vie a venir.
