I was friends with Martha in the mid 70s when I lived in Geneseo. Born and raised in New York City, the closest I got to a horse was seeing them in Central Park and I didn't know a fox hound from poodle. My years in Geneseo was among the happiest in my life and Martha was a big part in that. We rode together, hunted mushrooms, and bird watched. To this very day, I ALWAYS close a gate when I go in and out, I have a big bird feeder and bird bath in my yard in her honor and I really impressed someone in my Minneapolis neighborhood while out walking by correctly identifying her dog as a foxhound. Martha was a generous and loving presence in my life.
