Dear Helen & Family,
Even though we lost touch after leaving Flagstaff in 1977, we have fond memories of the good times we had at your home and at Ashland College with Jack, you, and our kids. Betsy and I send our sincerest sympathy to you, Beth, and Marshall. Jack was a remarkable talent and intellect who left us with much to remember and cherish.
Love,
The Wellers

I was terribly saddened to learn of Jack's passing. Although I didn't know him well, I admired his musical talent greatly and always enjoyed hearing the sound of piano music emanating from the Johnston house as I walked back to my own home after a day on campus. My deepest condolences to the family.

Dear Helen and family,
Having known Jack since my first GCP production in the early 1980's as a chorus member, I feel privileged to have shared my love of musical theatre with him in many productions that followed. Our last production together was in 2008 when he was music director for The Wizard of Oz production I directed. We had come full circle, and I so appreciated having that partnership with him. Always honest and insightful of your work, he helped many vocalists in our area improve their skills. My deepest condolences on your loss. Jack will be deeply missed by so many.

I can't express enough my sorrow for your loss. He was my mentor and my friend. He sometimes yelled at me, and sometimes consoled me. We worked on tough shows together, and ate lunches together for I don't know how many years. I loved him, and count it as one of my greatest honors to have known him. I wish to all peace.

Jack and I were colleagues for many years, producing musical productions at SUNY Geneseo and in Rochester. He was a generous, talented and creative partner.
I was later selected to serve as his assistant director of the School of Performing Arts at Geneseo, a position made more pleasant by our musical collaborations.
I am deeply saddened by Jack's sudden and unexpected passing.

Hello Helen,
I was so sad to hear about Jack's passing & I just wanted to offer my deepest condolences to you & the entire family.
I attended SUNY Geneseo from 1997-2001. I have quite a few great memories of working with & just chatting with Jack through my college years. We first met working on a production of 'Hair' & I remember liking Jack immediately. He was a wonderful man & had a great way of looking at the world. He touched so many lives, he was loved by so many & he will be terribly missed.

Jack, you most certainly left your mark on this Earth. It was an honor to be one of your students, to work with you on Anything Goes with the Geneseo Community Players, and to observe your brilliance and swagger. Rest easy.

Beth, Helen, Marshall…
I'm so sorry, and I'm so sad right now. Jacks influence on me can't be overstated. I think of him every time I learn a new piece of music. His questions - Where do I breathe so the lyric makes sense? How do I enunciate? How do I finish a phrase? etc They all pop into my head, and they have shaped me as a performer all these years.
We had gotten together for lunch (along with Scott Ray and Terry Browne) a few times over the last several years. I'm grateful for that time to reacquaint, and laugh at each other.
I loved him, and I'll miss him. But I'll still think of him every time I work on a new piece (which turns out to be a LOT these days!).

Jack will always hold a special place in my heart. When I was 17, I went up for my audition into the music program. Jack was so incredibly nice and helpful during that nerve wracking visit. After finding out that my 90+ average wasn't good enough to get into Geneseo, he wrote a letter of recommendation to admit me under the "special talent" program. A few weeks later, my acceptance letter arrived. I will forever be grateful to Jack for taking time out to help a scared young girl and to help make my dreams come true. What a special man! So sorry to the family for your huge loss.
