Obituary of Wilfred A. Roffe

Wilfred A. Roffe, 85, of Main St. in Leicester, died Monday, December 5, 2011 at Noyes Memorial Hospital in Dansville, NY. He was predeceased by his wife Mary Love Roffe in 2010, his brother, G. Art Roffe killed in World War II and his brother Francis in 1987. He is survived by his daughter, Karen Roffe and son, Tom Roffe both of Leicester, brother, John (Marva) Roffe of Cohocton, sister, Letitia Welch of Rochester, brother in law, David (Patti) Love of Groveland, sister in law, Jean (Lou) Ianni of Stafford, several nieces, nephews and cousins, many dear friends. Wilfred was born June 12, 1926 in Groveland, NY the third son of George and Edith Hulburt Roffe. He was a 1943 graduate of Groveland High School. Wilfred worked for the Lackawanna Railroad before enlisting in the US Navy. He served in the Navy as a gunners mate during World War II and was discharged at Pearl Harbor in 1947. He graduated from Lima Junior College in 1949 and from Springfield College in MA in 1952 with a Bachelor's of Science Degree. Wilfred and his wife of nearly 60 years, Mary B. Love, were married in the Sparta First Presbyterian Church in Groveland Station in June of 1950. He began his long railroad career in 1952 as an executive secretary of the YMCA Railroad Branch in Groveland Station before moving on to Binghamton for 5 years, Syracuse for 10 years, and then Union Station in Washington, DC for 19 years after which he retired in 1986 as Personnel Director for Amtrak. Wilfred was a lifelong member of the Sparta First Presbyterian Church where he served as an Elder and Clerk of Session for many years. He was a member of the Masons and the Livingston County Historical Society serving them as treasurer. No Prior Calling Hours. Memorial Services will be held Saturday, December 10, 2011 at 11:00 AM at the Sparta First Presbyterian Church in Groveland Station with Rev. Ron Salade officiating. Interment will be in Leicester Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Sparta First Presbyterian Church, 4681 Scottsburg Rd., Groveland, NY, 14462.
