Obituary of Mary J. Tabakis

Mary J. Tabakis, 70, of Morgan Estates in Geneseo, died Friday, July 27, 2012 at Highland Hospital in Rochester, NY. She is survived by her sister, Frances (David) Hall of Rochester, niece, Christine Hall of Syracuse, nephew, John (Stacy) Hall of Grand Haven, MI, grand niece, Ashlyn Hall, grand nephew Breckan Hall, several aunts, uncles and cousins. She was born June 22, 1942 in Rochester, NY the daughter of John and Katherine Scondras Tabakis. Mary was a graduate of Geneseo High School Class of 1960. She was retired from the Maintenance Department at SUNY at Geneseo. She had also been employed at Sanders Publications in Geneseo and Star Headlight and Lantern in Honeoye Falls. ''THERE'S NO PLACE LIKE HOME", and according to Mary Tabakis, Geneseo was the PLACE for her. Just before Mary passed away, she started to write a memoir. Unfortunately, it will never be completed. Here are the first three sentences: "I can remember Geneseo of years ago, growing up in a village where everyone knew each other. I don't know how my grandfather John Scondras settled here, but as far as I'm concerned, he picked a place dear to my heart. Today, as I sit on the bench, near where my father ran a restaurant, I can close my eyes and reflect backwards." It is sad that Mary J. will not be able to continue to reflect upon her fondest memories. So when you sit or go by the bench where Mary sat, and that was probably several thousand times, remember her waving to you and how proud she was to be a Geneseo resident. No Prior Calling Hours. Memorial Services will be held Thursday, August 16, 2012 at 1 PM at St. Michael's Episcopal Church with Rev. Eric Thompson officiating. Interment will be in Temple Hill Cemetery in Geneseo. Memorials may be made to Geneseo Ambulance Fund, P.O. Box 428, Geneseo, NY 14454.
