Natalie Helena Waddy Obituary

Natalie Helena Waddy, age 81, of West Lake Road in Geneseo, passed away Friday, July 10, 2026 at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, NY. She was predeceased by her parents, Rev. Lawrence Waddy and Natalie Waddy, as well as her sister, Nerissa Wilson.


She is survived by her son, Nicholas Waddy of Geneseo; her sister, Joanna Waddy of London, England; and many extended family members in England as well as scores of loving and devoted friends.


Helena was born June 13, 1945 in Winchester, England, the daughter of Rev. Lawrence Heber Waddy and Natalie Dora (Robinson) Waddy.


Helena grew up in Tonbridge, Kent, attended boarding school at Benenden, received her B.A. and M.A. in History at Cambridge University, and her Ph.D. in History at UCSD. She lived many years in England, in San Diego, and in Geneseo. She taught History for 31 years at SUNY Geneseo, specializing in German History, and authoring many articles and two books. She was well known locally for taking long walks with her dog Sophie, through which she made many new friends. Since retiring in 2016, her passions have included international travel, Italian language and culture, watercolor painting, political activism, and spending time with her beloved dogs, formerly Sophie and, since 2020, Daisy.


A memorial gathering will be held in the fall.
