Edith C. Harder Obituary
Edith Clark Harder, of Geneseo, passed away on January 13, 2026, at Hildebrandt Hospice Care Center in Rochester, New York, at age 95.
Edith was born Edith May Clark in 1930 in Detroit Michigan to Scottish immigrant parents. Edith grew up during the Great Depression in a neighborhood of Detroit that was a true melting pot. As an adult, she often told stories about her youth – how her neighbors were from all over the world, how most had very little and had to work hard to survive the times, but how they all got along and supported one another. As a child, she competed regularly as a Scottish dancer in "Highland Fling" competitions. As a teenager and young adult Edith excelled in school, completing a Chemistry degree at Wayne State University and then spending a year at the University of Michigan Medical School before "running out of money and steam." After her U of M experience, Edith spent a few years working in industry in various lab settings in Detroit until she met an older "elusive" bachelor and married him. The Harders, Edith and Worth, began a family in MI but eventually moved to Geneseo NY for Worth's employment at SUNY Geneseo. Together, they raised five children.
Edith strongly promoted good nutrition to her children ("finish your vegetables" was an understatement), and exposure to music lessons ("practice before you leave the house"). She played the piano accordion herself - an instrument almost the size of her – and at times sang along to entertain the family.
Edith also loved baking, art, gardening, and her Buffalo Bills. She collected the Bills weekly newspapers, analyzed them in detail, and adored Marv Levy.
Edith was also very proud of her grandchildren, and enjoyed spending time with them.
Edith's last several years were marked by a progression of dementia. She lived her final seven years in Bergen, NY where she was lovingly cared for by her son Worth and his wife Deb.
Edith was predeceased by her husband Worth Sr, her sister Shirley Schleicher of Fort Lauderdale, FL, and nephew Kevin Schleicher. Edith is survived by her five children and their spouses/partners – Ethel (Corre) Rubley of Pulaski, NY, Sara (Brad) Weaver of Signal Mountain, TN, Worth (Deb) Harder Jr, of Bergen, NY, Vivian (Bob Trouskie) Benton of Ballston Spa, NY and David (Jen) Harder, of Batavia, NY; seven grandchildren – Irena Longworth, Travis Longworth, Warren (Maggie) Weaver, April Weaver, Kaitlyn Harder, Maddie Benton, Jamie Benton; and one great-grandchild, Laney Weaver; nephews – Keith (Lori) Schleicher, Kirk Schleicher, James (Maria) Eliaison, Steve (Briggitte) Eliaison, and niece Wendy (George) Azrak. A private, family service is being planned for a future date.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Wadsworth Library, 24 Center St., Geneseo, NY 14454.
