Vineta M. Johnson Obituary
Vineta Southcombe Johnson
May 2, 1943 – October 18, 2025
Vineta Southcombe Johnson, loving wife, devoted mother, cherished grandmother, and faithful servant of the Lord, passed away peacefully at the age of 82.
Born on May 2, 1943, in Caledonia, NY, to Lawrence and Mary Ruth Southcombe, Vineta dedicated her life to faith, family, and service. She held various roles throughout her career—including at Cal-Mum Central School's cafeteria, as an administrative assistant for Dr. Larry Schwiechler, and at the Caledonia Marketplace—but her favorite role by far was being a stay-at-home mother to her children, whom she adored beyond measure.
Vineta's deep faith guided her throughout her life. A member of the United Presbyterian Stone Church in Caledonia and later of the Geneseo Methodist Church, she was a proud member of the church choir, blessing many with her beautiful soprano voice. One of her fondest memories was singing with the choir when they performed at a Rochester Red Wings game.
Her servant's heart extended beyond her church. She volunteered with Habitat for Humanity and Teresa House alongside her beloved husband, Paul Johnson, who predeceased her in 2022 after 59 years of marriage. Together, they shared a remarkable love and partnership, now reunited for eternity.
Vineta was also a Girl Scout Leader in the 1970s, nurturing and guiding young lives in her community. She was known for her kindness, strong will, and unmatched generosity—especially when it came to baking. Her kitchen was always filled with the smell of fresh pies, fresh cookies—never just one kind, but many—often baked for church, family, or anyone in need of comfort. She also loved to sew, creating cherished bean bags for family members that are still treasured today.
Vineta was also an avid card player, and her love of Bridge and other card games shaped many of her friendships and brought joy to countless gatherings. Whether around the kitchen table with family or at a game with friends, her sharp mind and playful spirit made every hand memorable. These moments of laughter, strategy, and connection were just another way she shared her warmth and built lasting bonds with those around her.
Her love for her family was the heart of her life. Whether it was chasing after her children with a wooden spoon in hand when they misbehaved or spoiling them and her grandchildren with trips, coloring Easter eggs, pool days, and their favorite cookies, Vineta created a lifetime of warm and unforgettable memories.
Vineta is survived by her children: Roger (Barbara Overholt) Johnson of Livonia, NY, and Dana Johnson VanScoter (Eddie Krysinski) of Hamlin, NY. She is also survived by her beloved grandchildren and great-grandson: Alexander Paul VanScoter (Kelsey Neumann) and son Asher of Concord, NC; Alicia Johnson of Sanford, FL; and Sara Johnson of Livonia, NY. She leaves behind many nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of faithful friends whose lives were deeply touched by her love.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Unity Hospice, Crossroads House in Batavia, Teresa House in Geneseo, and Marita Keys of Brockport, NY, for their compassionate care during Vineta's final days.
Vineta's life was a true testament to faith, love, and service. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
