Maria "Mary" Isgro
Maria "Mary" Isgro (92) passed away on Wednesday, October 15, 2025. Born in Brooklyn, New York she was the beloved daughter of the late John and Jennie Tauro. A graduate of Hunter College, Mary was a dedicated elementary school teacher, beginning her career on Long Island.
In 1957, she married Robert "Bob" Isgro, her husband of 65 years, and continued to teach in Colorado and California. In 1963 she and Bob moved to Geneseo where Mary first taught at the Holcomb Elementary School on the campus of SUNY Geneseo and, when it closed, finished her remarkable career educating the children at Geneseo Elementary School with patience, warmth and kindness.
Mary was an ardent supporter of the Geneseo Chamber Singers, the choral group her husband directed for many years. Known affectionally as "Docette" by the members of the group, she was there for every concert and tour, frequently hosting the "family" of Chamber Singers for gatherings at her home.
She was also a long-time member of the Geneseo Garden Club and the Monday Evening Club.
Mary was predeceased by her husband Robert Isgro and brother Nicholas Tauro.
She is lovingly remembered by her extended family, John and Lori Lacitignola and their children Daniel (Kristina) and James; loyal friend Ric Hooker; and several cousins.
To celebrate Mary's life relatives and friends are invited to gather on Saturday, October 25, 2025 from 2:00-4:00 PM at the Rector-Hicks Funeral Home, 111 Main St. in Geneseo. A private burial at the discretion of the family will take place at St. Mary's Cemetery, Geneseo.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made in Mary's memory to St. John's Foundation, designated to the Dementia Resource Center, 150 Highland Ave., Rochester NY 14620.
