He showed me the ropes when I first came on the job.

I will miss Greg O’Connell
Ever since I moved to Cobble Hill in 1973, Red hook has always been my favorite Brooklyn neighborhood.I love the brick warehouses that line the waterfront and I have eaten lunch in my car at many “secret’ spots while watching the boats. I would often see Greg in his overalls, going about his business in his pick up truck.
One day at dusk, pre Fairway and the Valentino pier , I went down to Conover St. to see a dance performance.There were 30 or so half dressed dancers with lit torches swaying in the water making there way to dry land. Drumming music filled the air. I happened to be standing next to Greg I think he recognized me as that guy eating in his car by the water. I asked him if he ever imagined he would be watching anything like what we were now experiencing on Conover street?. He laughed, shaking his head with a big ‘No’.
Greg might not have imagined it but it was his generosity that allowed the group to use his property that night and for many other artists & groups to use his piers for studios and exhibits .His real estate vision transformed Red Hook into a location for many small manufacturing business, artist studios, food venues and places to live, always respecting the unique nature of the neighborhood. He was a rare advocate / activist developer. He was responsible for the growth of Red Hook while always retaining its charm. He was a visionary who thru his actions realized the neighborhood so many cherish today. I will always be grateful there was a Greg O’Connell. Marc Laub.

Mr. o’Connell made quite an impression on me. He was so generous in his support of Mt. Morris, a town rather near to my heart. His influence was seen in the improvements he made and in his care of the Genesee Valley, but he himself was invisible, never seeking the recognition for himself. In this he was quite a model of a good citizen, and I will always be grateful to him.

As perhaps one of the few tenants here in Mt. Morris who came to know Greg the person, I appreciated our occasional casual and pleasant interactions.
He once shared the story of how a Jewish community in Brooklyn prayed for his brother’s welfare and he ensured the Rabbi in turn could take in the fresh waterfront air at one of his properties.
Greg was, as my people say, a real mensch.
He will be missed.

I get my love of lists from my Uncle Greg. He was up anod out every morning to get the world working and he loved every minute of it. I loved having conversations with him, he was such a progressive forward thinker, always involved in numerous things and when he asked you a question, he was interested in what you had to say. He loved lots of butter on his bread and he was the true definition of a meat and potatoes guy. He always had a smile or a laugh, like all the O’Connell brothers and Grandpa O’Connell too. He, of course, will be missed by all he’s left behind, but I know he’s being welcomed by the angels that have been waiting for him. It’s been a while, but Grandpa’s going to have to dust off his broom. ❤️

I had the opportunity to work closely with Greg on a project several years ago. Spending time with a visionary like Greg and seeing how he worked was enlightening. His humility, fairness and kindness is what I remember most about our work together. He believed in people and he believed in empowering them. He loved solving problems and nothing ever rattled him. When our project came to a conclusion it was both rewarding and sad. However, our friendship continued with conversations about family, happy holiday wishes and some great philosophical conversation. He will be missed!

I think I got my love of lists from my Uncle Greg. He was a man with a plan, up and out every morning to get the world working. He loved what he did and it showed. I loved talking with Uncle Greg, because it was always so forward thinking and out of the box and he asked questions and was truly interested in your response. He loved lots of butter on his bread and he was a true meat and potatoes lover. I am so glad I saw him last year and he shared his story of how he got the house he lives in and you could tell he loved it. He always had a big smile or laugh, just like all the O’Connell brothers (and Grandpa O’Connell as well). He will be missed by those left behind and I’m sure welcomed by the angels that are eager to see him again. ❤️

We saw him last May for my nephew John’s graduation and I’m so happy I saw his home in Geneseo. He told us the story how he got it. Fell in love with it in college and he was happy. You will be missed by those living and welcomed by those anxious to see you again. ❤️

Greg would come down to Perry regularly on Saturdays to meet me at the Farmers' Market or "coffee hour with the mayor" so we could talk shop, which usually included him regaling me with fascinating stories of his experiences in the world of NYC red tape and the challenges (and rewards) of that work. We would keep each other up to date on small-town, upstate, downtown news.
In these ways Greg was a mentor to me and reminded me a lot of my own father. I had an outsized affection for him as a result: we shared a passion, he was a teacher and a story teller. I will see Greg every time I see any of the properties in Perry or Dansville, or Mount Morris or Geneseo that he helped transform - which is often! And when I do, I will picture him in one of two settings: sharing stories from his life with a sparkle and smile in his eyes; or in his truck/office heading from one construction site to the next. Miss you Greg, and my condolences to your wife and loving family!

I have been very lucky to know Greg for over 40 years. He has owned the house that my family has lived in. I would love when he came to check on the house because that meant I got to talk to him to see how he was doing. He was always wanting to make sure everything was alright and that I didn't need anything. I will miss having the talks with him when he would visit.

Greg was a very generous man
I hunted his land and was part of the former hunting club on River Rd in Mount Morris, NY for several years, I’d love to speak with the family about getting hunting rights back for myself, my brother, and our young kids - rekindle a tradition that I grew up with. Greg always had a friendly smile and small town wave when you would pass him on a dirt road. My husband and I met Greg while he was on his honeymoon with Elizabeth in 1977 in Spain. We became lifelong friends and took many wonderful vacations together. Upon meeting him you knew that he was a visionary and someone who did not shy away from hard work. Grateful for having met him and will cherish the many memories.
