Elizabeth Hainey

Obituary of Elizabeth J. Hainey

Elizabeth “Betty” Hainey died peacefully at age 91 on April 19, 2017, surrounded by her children at Highland Hospital in Rochester, NY. Betty was born on November 16, 1925 to Leo and Alice Daly O’Connor in McGraw, NY. She was a Graduate of St. Mary’s High School in Cortland, NY. Betty retired from the Rochester Telephone Company after many years of service as an operator. She was predeceased by her husband, Edward Hainey, her grandson, Joseph Hainey and her dog, Sparky. Betty was survived by her five sons, Timothy (Georgette) Hainey of Wellsville, Daniel (Mary Roodenburg) Hainey of Geneseo, Matthew (Laura) Hainey of Boulder, CO, Mark (Donna Schneble) Hainey of Dansville, Peter (Tammy) Hainey of Mt. Morris, three daughters, Ellen (Ron) Spink of Geneseo, Kelly (Skip) Luthart of Cuylerville, Laurie (Kelly) Kennedy of Groveland, her beloved grandchildren, Shane Yonn, Kevin Hainey and Tyler Dieter with whom she resided. Betty was also survived by 23 grandchildren, Timothy’s children, Melissa (Brad) Castle, Tiffany (Peter) McCumiskey and Michael (Jentry) Hainey. Kelly’s son, Patrick (Donell) Hainey and Laurie’s son, Chaz Santucci. Betty was a grandmother like no other. She played poker with “her boys” every Friday night and would regularly beat all of them. As a woman who grew up in the aftermath of Great Depression, she saw the need to help those less fortunate and regularly extended a helping hand to others. Betty opened her home to her family, friends, cats and dogs, she did not discriminate. She will most certainly be remembered for that. An unapologetic, lifelong democrat, who had no problem expressing her opinions to others, passionately and persistently. Betty stood by her beliefs and was amazingly loyal to her loved ones. Betty will be missed immensely by her family, friends and all who knew her. Calling hours will be held on Saturday, April 22, 2017 from 1-4 PM at the Rector-Hicks Funeral Home, 111 Main St. in Geneseo. Memorial Services will be private at the convenience of the family.
